Why he's below Bill Sharman: Ignore the MVP for a moment; Unseld was a role player. He was an undersized, pass-first center who was a not a good shot blocker. His MVP season was one of the weakest in league history, which he won mostly because no one else stood out. And his Finals MVP came when he was the 2nd best player on his team and averaged only 9 PPG in the series.
Why he's above the rest: Whether he deserved them or not, he won an MVP and Finals MVP. He's by far the lowest ranked player with both of those awards (19 spots lower than Willis Reed). His outlet passes were legendary and often not captured in stats, as was he screen-setting. He brought intangibles that were noticed by the voters who gave him his MVPs. Those same intangibles allowed him to be a top-2 player on 4 Finals teams.
