Why he's below Dwight Howard: Arizin's career only lasted 10 seasons due to military service and early retirement, and most of that came before Russell and Wilt joined the league. He's another early player who is difficult to rank, but I have him this many spots below Dolph Schayes due mostly to length of career.
Why he's above the rest: Arizin is the 4th best player of the pre-Russell era. His achievements are good enough to make the list on their own but are even more impressive considering he lost 2 seasons in his prime for military service during the Korean War. When he was 23, he led the league in PPG and FG%, and then didn't play again until he was 26. His second year back, he was the best player on a championship team; his third year back, he led the league in scoring again. In 1961-62, he combined with Wilt Chamberlain to average 72.3 PPG (don't think about that too much). And Arizin gets big bonus points for being the first player to commonly shoot jump shots. He changed the way the game is played and deserves more recognition from basketball fans.
