Why he's below Bill Russell: Kareem not only had a long Finals drought during his prime; he completely missed the playoffs in 1975 and 1976 when he was 28 and 29 years old. Kareem even had an all-star quality teammate in both seasons and still finished below .500.
Why he's above the rest: There isn’t much to add that Kareem's resume doesn't already say. But how about that his number of top-5 MVP seasons matched the number of seasons in Michael Jordan’s entire career? Or that he won Finals MVPs 14 seasons apart? When the dunk was taken away from him in college, he used it to learn arguably the most unstoppable shot in NBA history, the sky hook. Kareem was the evolution of the center position, taking the size and athleticism that Wilt and Russell had and adding more skill than either of them ever needed to learn.
