Why he's below Rick Barry: Like Barry, Gary Payton had a reputation as a talented but bad teammate. But Rick Barry was able to take a team all the way to a championship; Payton never won one until the twilight of his career.
Why he's above the rest: For an entire decade, Payton was the best defensive guard in the league. He made 1st Team All-Defense 9 years in a row, tying him for the record most appearances, and is 4th all time in steals. In the 1996 Finals, his defense on Jordan was the only thing that kept Seattle in the series. With Seattle down 3-0, Payton was finally switched onto Jordan. They lost the series but won 2 of the 3 remaining games. Jordan averaged only 24 PPG on 37% shooting in those games. His passing and shooting were decent but not exceptional; it was his defense that made him one of the greatest point guards who ever played.
