Why he's below David Robinson: Both players struggled to advance in the postseason in their primes and found success as a veteran leader later in their careers. But Garnett only made it out of the first round once with Minnesota. Robinson was also nearly as good a defender as Garnett and a much better offensive player.

Why he's above the rest: Garnett was one of the greatest defensive forwards in NBA history. He's the only non-guard to make 1st Team All-Defense 9 times and is one of only 2 players in the top 20 all-time in both steals and blocks. He filled up the stat sheet in Minnesota, leading the team in all five stat categories in 2002-03 and taking the team to their only conference finals in 2004. In Boston he was able to quickly take on a veteran leadership role, winning Defensive Player of the Year (He's one of only 5 players to win both MVP and DPOY) and a championship in his first season. Garnett proved that he's the rare player who put up big numbers on bad teams but could thrive on good teams as well.
