Why he's below Karl Malone: I went back and forth so many times on Malone and Barkley. I think Barkley was a more talented player, had a higher peak, and won his MVP in a more competitive season than Malone. But Karl Malone played 403 more regular season games and scored 55% more points in his career than Barkley. Due to injuries and an earlier retirement, Barkley's career totals just aren't good enough to overcome Malone's Finals appearances.

Why he's above the rest: Aside from his rookie year, Barkley averaged a double-double every season he played. If you count seasons he was injured, that's 15 in a row. I can't find a list, but I believe that's a record. It's for sure a record for someone his size, at only 6'6". Many of those were offensive rebounds, giving his team an extra possession and himself an easy basket, which helped him lead the league in FG% 5 seasons in a row. His MVP and Finals appearance came with the Suns, but with the 76ers, he was one of the best players in the league every single season. It's only because his teams often barely qualified for the playoffs and were overshadowed by the other great teams of the late 80s/early 90s that he only finished in the top-3 in MVP voting once. In my opinion, he's the fourth best player of the late 80s, after only Magic, Jordan, and Hakeem.
